This quick study is a sub-topic support for the foreshadows in Volume 7 - CHRIST IN THE TABERNACLE - A Foreshadow of Redemption

One of the most revealing Hebrew words in the Bible is the word "banah". "stone" and "pattern" are words derived from the root word "banah".

"Stone"; "Pattern"-

Genesis 28:22 (KJV) - And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

Exodus 25:9 (KJV) - According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make it.

"Stone"; "Pattern" - (Strong's - Hebrew) #68 'eben (eh'-ben); from the root of  #1129 through the meaning to build; a stone.

#1129 banah (baw-naw'); a primitive root; to build (literally and figuratively).

Use in KJV-- (begin to) build (-er), obtain children, make, repair, set (up), X surely.

"Tabernacle" - (Strong's - Hebrew) #4908 mishkan (mish-kawn') - a residence (including a shepherd's hut, the lair of animals, figuratively, the grave; also the Temple); specifically, the Tabernacle (properly, its wooden walls).

The word "stone" is derived from the same root word as "pattern" is derived. Jacob set up the pillar of stone and called the place Bethel, which means "God's house". It is apparent the Hebrew language is revealing the tabernacle as a foreshadow of the future temple (house) of God's residence in the earth. The word "stone", as used in the New Testament, also represents the temple of God. Some of those New Testament scriptures follow;

John 1:42 (KJV) - And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone.

Ephesians 2:19-22 (KJV) - Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; (20) And are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; (21) In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: (22) In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Mark 14:57-59 (NIV) - Then some stood up and gave this false testimony against him: (58) "We heard him say, 'I will destroy this man-made temple and in three days will build another, not made by man.'"

Luke 21:5-6(NIV) - Some of his disciples were remarking about how the temple was adorned with beautiful stones and with gifts dedicated to God. But Jesus said, (6) "As for what you see here, the time will come when not one stone will be left on another; every one of them will be thrown down."

1 Corinthians 3:16 (NIV) - Don't you know that you yourselves are God's temple and that God's Spirit lives in you?

Another foreshadow reflecting God saving the Jew is contained in Joshua's account of Israel's crossing the Jordan River to receive the promise of God. The Jews will be a part of the future temple in the earth and is foreshadowed when God instructed Joshua to set up the stones in the midst of the Jordan River, which foreshadows salvation of the Jews in the midst of the tribulation period. See "Crossing the Jordan - The Salvation of Israel" - Volume IV for and in-depth study of this foreshadow.

Christ, knowing hidden manna of the Hebrew language, gave Simon the name Cephas (Stone) because he saw Simon's foundation of faith as being the rock upon which He would build His church in the future - Matthew 16:16-18 (NIV) - Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." (17) Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. (18) And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.

When Jacob set the stone for a pillar and called the place the House of God, he was seeing into the future. Out of Jacob would come the nation of Israel. Out of Israel would come the Messiah. Out of the Messiah would come the church, the future temple of God in the earth -1 Peter 2:4-5 (NIV) - As you come to him, the living Stone (Jesus) - rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him - (5) you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
